An amazing variety of vernacular architecture exists in the northern Himalayas and further eastwards – from Islamic elements of Kashmir to Buddhist Zanskar and Ladakh. After that are the Hindu styles in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and on to Buddhist Sikkim again.

In Kashmir deodar timber is the main material used and its lengths are bonded with stone, all resting on stone foundations. The great number of massive deodar columns used in the Jama Masjid in Srinagar are testimony to its great value as an architectural element. The Jhelum river-front has an interesting medley of houses. Over a period of time wooden screens gave way to glass, just as mud and grass roofs gave way to the overwhelming use of galvanized corrugated iron sheets, for domestic as well as mosque construction. The mud and grass roofs were laid on birch bark on the roof structure, which made the roofs water proof and was good insulation in the extreme cold. However, hardly any houses at present have this very traditional form of roofing material.

Like the rest of India the bricks used were earlier the thinner nanak-shahi variety and were gradually replaced with the British standard brick. Bay windows still predominate the façades of the houses and the British introduced corrugated iron sheets soon became standard even in vernacular houses’ roofs. The moment one enters Ladakh or branches off to Zanskar a totally different style emerges, that of the typical Buddhist dwelling, which continues to Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. A day’s drive from Kargil takes you to Padam, the headquarters of Zanskar region. Padam is situated in a vast amphitheatre of mountains with monasteries perched on some of them. Another day’s trek from Padam is the historical Phugtal monastery, very picturesquely built inside a huge cave in a mountain with the houses of the monks all around it on a steep incline.

The typical Buddhist house has a level roof that becomes the working area in the long snowbound winter and is also used for storage. The walls are of compacted mud with timber bonding for strength. Cantilevered wooden bay windows contrast with the mud walls, with the structure rising up a number of storeys. The external walls are tapered for more stability. The windows are ornately worked with elements cantilevered and supported on many purlins and rafters. The wood used is mainly willow and juniper.

Beyond, in Himachal Pradesh many local styles exist, depending on the available local material and preferences. The structures of Manali use heavy stone slabs while those of Kangra use slate pieces which are locally available, thus making the houses relatively lighter. The graceful old houses of Manali are made from huge deodar logs, the ends of which cantilever out to form balconies. The window supports are beautifully carved. A good number of these stately houses still survive in the Manali area.

In Himachal Pradesh, from the Rohtang pass to the adobe houses of Lahaul on the north and Kunzum pass downstream of the river Chenab, are the summer pasture lands of the nomadic Gaddi shepherds of Himachal Pradesh, which continue to the beautiful Chandratal lake, approached from a narrow road towards the north of Kunzum pass. From Kunzum pass one heads towards Spiti, the road passing through a barren stretch, after which one comes across the typical Buddhist houses around Kaza, the main town of Spiti valley. The settlements are scattered in the broad valley with the Kye monastery rising gracefully on a conical mountain. A road takes one to the highest motorable village in the world, that of Kibber, with typical Buddhist flat roofed houses. To the right while going from Kaza to Kinnaur is the Pin valley with dispersed Buddhist houses. Also in Spiti is the magnificent Dhankar gompa whose scattered houses appear to be precariously perched on a limestone mountain.

Travelling along the river Beas, before reaching Manali, a right turn from Kulu takes one to the Shoja valley with its typical stone roofed cantilevered houses, all along the way to the Jalori pass, beyond which come the country houses of Shimla district. In Lahaul valley the Buddhist style continues with some variations in it is form, though building material remains the same. Lahaul also has a Hindu population and their houses differ from the Buddhist ones to some extent. In the foot-hills an interesting heritage village in Himachal Pradesh is Pragpur, with a number of styles varying from traditional vernacular to those with an admixture of colonial inputs.

Beyond Himachal Pradesh lies the newly created hill state of Uttarakhand, which includes the regions of Kumaon and Garhwal. The different types of houses illustrated in this work are from Uttarkashi, Almora and Jaunsar, including the remote village of Doni. Driving into Uttarakhand from the state capital Dehradun, one reaches the historic village of Lakhamandal, which has a protected medieval temple. One of the last few traditional houses of the area survives here at Lakhamandal, right next to the temple. Earlier the entire region was dotted with such impressive houses, as can be seen from the black and white photographs reproduced from the archives of the Anthropological Survey of India, whose head office is at Kolkata. This, however, is just one of the many styles that exist in Uttarakhand, which are illustrated.

These differences are best illustrated in the Almora dwellings, where the urban houses of businessmen are built in the bazaar adjoining each other with some having retail outlets built in on the ground floor. The rural ones are of a different style with work spaces for agriculture operation and animals. Where many of a community are staying together they are made into row houses with a common working area in front.

The chaukat of Uttaranchal is the typical four-storied timber-bonded house in the rural areas in the interiors, which is earthquake proof, despite it looking top-heavy. These are doublewalled traditionally made structures made with local timber and stone blocks bonded for strength, the space in between the two walls being filled by stones 🟥
